He acknowledged the efforts of the players, emphasizing that although the result was disappointing, the team should not allow the setback to overshadow their hard work and dedication.

The President urged the squad to quickly put the loss behind them and concentrate on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled for January to February 2026 in Morocco.

According to him, the continental tournament offers a fresh opportunity for the Super Eagles to showcase their quality, rebuild confidence, and reassert themselves as one of Africa’s strongest footballing nations.

In an official statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information & Strategy, he stated: "Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them.

"We must now plug all the loopholes. Our football administrators, players, and indeed all stakeholders must go back to the drawing board.

"Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory."

Nigeria’s World Cup hopes came to an end after a tense and emotionally charged playoff match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The game finished 1–1 after extra time before Congo DR triumphed 4–3 in the penalty shootout, advancing to the Inter-Confederation playoff and keeping their own World Cup dream alive.

Although disappointed that Nigeria will miss the World Cup for a second consecutive time, President Tinubu praised the resilience and determination shown by the team throughout the qualification journey.

He highlighted their impressive performance in the first leg of the playoffs and stressed that their unwavering effort until the final moments was worthy of recognition.
