AFCON: Special Eagles annihilate Burundi, pick quarterfinal ticket

Nigeria's men’s amputee football team Special Eagles on Tuesday booked the quarterfinal spot at the ongoing 2024 Amputee AFCON in Egypt after smashing Burundi 11-0 in their final group game, Nigeriasoccernet.com writes.

Burundi, the whipping boys in the group after getting smashed by host Egypt 10-2 earlier, suffered the big defeat against the Nigerian Eagles which ended their AFCON journey.

Michael Jewell, striker for the Nigerian side was the star performer in the win, scoring seven times while Turkey-based Mohammad Grima scored a hat-trick plus another goal by Olaa Buhachi made a light work of the newcomers.

The Special Eagles will now face the second-placed team from Group B in the quarter-finals on Thursday night, with Liberia looking set to finish behind Morocco in that group, depending on the outcome of their encounter, which is a late kick-off on Wednesday (today).

Seven out of the countries that progress to the last eight will make it to the 2026 Amputee World Cup in Morocco.

During the 2019 outing at the Nations Cup, Nigeria achieved their best ever result which was a second-place finish in Angola, losing 2-0 to the hosts in the final.
