South Africa and Senegal played to a 1-1 stalemate in their second Africa Cup of Nations Group B match in Mongomo on Friday night
The result leaves Bafana Bafana’s hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals hanging by a thread, while the Teranga Lions have moved to the top of the pool following Ghana’s win over Algeria earlier in the evening.
After a goalless first half in which neither side was really able to establish itself, South Africa claimed the lead early in the second stanza when Oupa Manyisa arrived late in the penalty area to coolly finish off a low cross from Anele Ngcongca.
However, just as in the 3-1 loss to Algeria on Monday night, Shakes Mashaba’s side was unable to hang onto a lead. Senegal equalised on the hour mark when a free kick floated to the back post saw Kara Mbodj power home a header.
Both teams created further chances to add to the scoreline, but the match ended in a frustrating 1-1 draw.
The final round of Group C matches will be played on Wednesday evening. South Africa face Ghana in Mongomo, while Senegal tackle Algeria in Malabo.
In order to advance, Bafana need to defeat the Black Stars and hope that Senegal beat Algeria.
