Captain Asamoah Gyan remains a doubt for Ghana's clash against Africa's best side Algeria in their must win 2015 Africa Cup of Nations match in Mongomo on Friday as coach Avram Grant is unable to say whether the striker will be available for the match.

The former Chelsea coach says Gyan must undergo a last minute fitness test by the Ghana medical team before a decision is taken whether he should play the match.

The Al Ain ace missed the opening Group C defeat to Senegal on Monday due to illness.

Grant’s side is however likely to profit from the return of his prolific captain for Friday’s must-win clash against Algeria as he did some light shake up with the team since Tuesday.

The 29-year-old returned to full-scale training with the side on Thursday night ahead of the game against Algeria.

"Gyan is sick and is doing everything to play. I hope he plays. We want him to play because we have a young team," Avram Grant told a pre-match press conference.

"In our game against Senegal apart from Harrison Afful, all our players were 24 and below.

"He is a good leader and one of the best strikers in Africa.

"If he does not play we will find another solution like we did against Senegal."

Gyan was sorely missed in the game as the Black Stars threw away an early lead to lose 2-1 to Senegal.

Ghana is desperate for a win following its opening group defeat to Senegal to resurrect their campaign in Equatorial Guinea.

The Black Stars face an early exit if the team is unable to secure the desired result against the tournament favourites on Friday.
