A part of the multipurpose sports complex at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, collapsed earlier Thursday morning, Nigeriasoccernet.com gathered.
The complex is under construction ahead of the biennial Sports Festival which will hold in less than 18 months time.
Reports say unspecified number of workers at the construction site sustained injuries and were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
The collapsed building under construction is among the facilities being prepared for the 21st National Sports Festival (NSF) to be hosted in the state beginning from November 28.
A Delta State representative however said there was no collapse, but a minor accident.
"The Stephen Keshi Stadium didn’t collapse and nobody died, SA to the Delta Government, Ovie Success said.
"What happened today was that one of the heavy equipment used in raising materials fell on the wall of the ongoing building at the Stephen Keshi Stadium and that warranted the section of that particular wall to be broken"
While reacting to the incident, the Delta State Government through the commissioner for information, Charles Aniagwu, said no life was lost in the incident.
He explained that the accident which left a worker slightly injured was caused by the misalignment of the crane by its operator which led to the heavy-duty equipment crashing on the wall of one of the floors.
It will be recalled that the collapsed building was recently inspected by the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, who gave a pass mark and said the facilities were 80% ready for use.
However, some structural engineers had expressed concerns over the speed at which the construction was going, doubting the solidity of the structures under construction according to Daily Trust.
