West Brom put four goals past a disappointing Burnley side to go ninth in the Premier League on Monday night at the Hawthorns.

Goals from Matt Phillips, James Morrison and Darren Fletcher saw the Baggies take a three goal lead into half-time, before Salomon Rondon completed the scoring after the hour mark to seal the win.

West Brom drew first blood early on, with Phillips firing past Tom Heaton after Dean Marney deflected James Morrison's cross goal-wards. The Baggies nearly doubled their lead moments later, but Chris Brunt's scuffed volley was easily saved by Heaton.

Jeff Hendrick went close for Burnley after a well worked set piece routine, but the Republic of Ireland midfielder couldn't loop his effort towards the back stick under pressure from Ben Foster.

Despite a sustained period of possession, Sean Dyche's side found themselves further behind in a matter of minutes. Striker Rondon held off interest from Michael Keane and played in Morrison, who ran unchallenged before curling a low effort past a sprawling Heaton.

Burnley continued to look susceptible at the back, with Rondon latching onto a wayward Keane header before fizzing a half-volley just over the bar. The Venezuelan again went close moments later, curling an effort towards the far post only to be denied by a fantastic save from Heaton, with the England international at full stretch to tip the ball over the bar.

Tony Pulis' side found themselves three goals to the good before half-time, with Fletcher adding his name to the scoresheet after volleying home Phillips' cross at the back stick following another efficient counter-attack.

Substitute Ashley Barnes had a penalty appeal waved away, while Craig Dawson saw a header drift wide with the offside flag up before West Brom put the result to bed. Morrison's clever touch freed Allan Nyom in the box, who cut his cross back to Rondon, and the 27-year-old made no mistake from close range, thumping home a deflected effort for a deserved goal.

With the two sides separated by only one place and a point prior to the game, many had expected Monday's clash to be a tight affair. It proved to a chastening night for the Clarets, however, with Pulis' Barcelona-esque forward trio of Morrison, Rondon and Phillips proving too clinical for an abject Burnley side.

The visitors offered little during the second period, with Johann Gudmundsson testing Foster with a thumping effort from range before hitting the crossbar with a free-kick. Substitute Hal Robson-Kanu nearly grabbed West Brom's fifth, but couldn't stretch far enough to meet Chris Brunt's deflected cross.

The result takes West Brom into the top half of the Premier League table and above opponents Burnley, who slip to 12th.
