Nigeria Premier Football League side Sunshine Stars of Akure today celebrates her 28th anniversary, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.

The 2-time CAF inter-club competition campaigner came into existence 1995.

The 'Owena Waves' came close to winning its first ever league title during the 2010/2011 season when they finished 2nd on the log with behind eventual winner Dolphins of Port Harcourt now called Rivers United.

Also known as the Akure Gunners, Sunshine Stars made it to the semi-final of the CAF Champions League in 2012 where they lost 4-3 on aggregate to TP Mazembe of DR Congo.

The club also narrowly missed out of a place in the final of the 2011 CAF Confederation Cup, losing by a 1-0 aggregate scoreline to Club Africain of Tunisia.
