Nigeria-Rwanda: Troost-Ekong praises Fredrick's impressive display
Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has showered praise on teammate Benjamin Fredrick, suggesting the attention should not be on his absence but the lad's impressive performances, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Fredrick showed no trait of nerve or inexperience on Saturday when Nigeria in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier defeated Rwanda 1-0.
His inclusion in the starting lineup came as a surprise especially for displacing the long standing marshal and captain of the team, Ekong.
In the post-match press conference, Troost-Ekong was asked about being left on the bench but swiftly redirected the attention to Fredrick's impressive performance.
“I want to add something to what the coach said. The focus should not be on me, why I did not start,” Troost-Ekong said.
“We should say a big congratulations to Benjamin. He played an amazing game today.
“To come in a game that is loaded with a lot of pressure at his age here in Uyo isn’t an easy thing.”
The Super Eagles' victory over Rwanda has kept their World Cup qualification hopes alive, with the team now focusing on their upcoming match against South Africa.
