Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has urged his teammates to take a lesson from Manchester United's organised and disciplined performance against Liverpool on Monday.

According to Chronicle Live, the England forward has told his team to cut out 'stupid schoolboy errors' in their upcoming games.

The Black Cats are winless so far in the Premier League and are currently at the bottom of the table with only two points from their opening eight games.

Their last game was a 2-0 loss in the bottom of table clash against Stoke City and Defoe believes that avoidable mistakes ultimately led to the defeat.

The 34-year-old - who has won 55 caps for England - saw Jose Mourinho's United frustrate Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in a goalless draw on Monday.

Defoe said that his team should take inspiration from the Red Devils' performance and try to 'sit back, frustrate people and counter-attack' in their future games.

"You can't expect to win every game, you can't win every game,"? he said.

"You've got to be realistic and look who you're playing against. I think the Stoke game, we could have won, the way they've started the season.

"You go away to Tottenham. You don't expect to win the game. Try and get a point, maybe. Take something out of the game, sit back and frustrate them.

"I watched the game on Monday night, Manchester United. This is Manchester United we're talking about. Jose Mourinho, one of the best managers in world football and has been for years.

"Goalkeeper (David De Gea) got the ball, the two centre-halves (Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling) pushed on and they hit it long. Throw-ins, they didn't throw it to a midfielder, they threw it towards the corner flag.

"They were organised and disciplined, and you say it's not a Manchester United team, the way they've played over the years.

"But for our players just to watch that and think that if teams like that can do it, then maybe we can go away from home and instead of maybe trying to press people, just sit back, frustrate people and try and hit them on the counter-attack, and try and get our goals like that.

"Just be solid like we were last year."?
