CAF Appoints Moroccan Referee Jalal Jiyed for Nigeria vs Egypt Third-Place Playoff
The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has confirmed the appointment of Moroccan referee Jalal Jiyed to officiate the third-place playoff match between Nigeria and Egypt at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Jiyed will be supported by Algerian official Lahlu Benbraham, who has been assigned to handle Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties for the encounter.
The playoff clash comes at the end of a dramatic semi-final stage for both teams. Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a painful exit after losing on penalties to tournament hosts Morocco following a goalless 120 minutes, while Egypt were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Senegal in the other semi-final.
With the title now out of reach, both African heavyweights will be eager to finish the tournament on a positive note by claiming a podium place. The third-place match offers a chance for redemption and pride, as Nigeria and Egypt, two of the most successful nations in AFCON history, look to conclude their Morocco 2025 campaign with a victory.
The encounter is expected to be fiercely contested, as both sides seek to bounce back from semi-final disappointment and give their fans something to celebrate before the final takes place in Rabat.
