Italy break long list of records in rout of Armenia
Although Italy’s 9-1 rout of Armenia on Tuesday fell just short of equalling their biggest win ever, the Azzurri did manage to break several other records.
Roberto Mancini’s men dominated at the Stadio Barbera in Palermo, though it wasn’t enough to secure Italy’s biggest win all-time.
That record from 1948 when the Azzurri defeated the USA 9-0 at the Olympics still stands, but several other records fell thanks to the result.
Tuesday’s win is Italy’s 11th win a row, extending the record set thanks to Friday’s victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, while also being the longest streak put together by a single coach.
Mancini also has 13 victories from his first 19 matches in charge, equalling Arrigo Sacchi.
It’s also the first time Italy have ended a European Championship qualifying campaign with 10 wins from 10 matches, to go along with 14 straight victories in qualifying overall and an unbeaten run of 40 games in Euro qualifiers.
The Azzurri also ended 2019 with 10 victories, the most in a calendar year, beating the previous mark of 9 set in 1990, 1994, 2000 and 2003.
