France youth international Lesley Ugochukwu is edging closer to switching his international allegiance to Nigeria, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) intensifying efforts to secure the midfielder's commitment, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The 22-year-old, who was born in Rennes to Nigerian parents, represented France at U-18, U-19, U-20, U-21 and U-23 levels but is yet to receive a senior call-up from Les Bleus. With his chances of breaking into the senior French national team appearing increasingly slim, the Super Eagles have emerged as a realistic option.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has publicly stated that the door remains open for Ugochukwu, while the NFF has continued discussions aimed at convincing the midfielder to represent Nigeria at senior international level.

Although Ugochukwu became provisionally cap-tied to France after featuring in a UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifier against Kazakhstan in November 2022, FIFA regulations still allow him to file a one-time switch since he has not played a competitive senior international for France.

Recent reports suggest the midfielder has begun the process of obtaining a Nigerian passport, a key step towards completing his international switch. Once that process is concluded, he would still need FIFA's approval before becoming eligible to represent the Super Eagles.

The former Rennes academy graduate was recently spotted in Owerri training with Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho during a visit to Nigeria, further fuelling speculation that a switch could be imminent.

Ugochukwu is regarded as a versatile midfielder capable of operating as a defensive or box-to-box player. His physical presence, composure in possession, ball-carrying ability and defensive work rate are qualities that could strengthen Nigeria's midfield options under Chelle.

Meanwhile, the midfielder has completed a loan move from Burnley to Turkish champions Galatasaray. The Turkish club confirmed the agreement, which includes a loan fee and an option that could become a permanent transfer if certain appearance-related conditions are met.

Speaking after completing the move, Ugochukwu expressed his delight at joining the Istanbul giants.

"I'm proud to be here. I'm very happy. I've come to a very big team. Since I was a kid, I've always wanted to play for big clubs. Coming to this big club completes this happiness for me. I can't wait to meet our fans and get to know everyone."

Burnley signed Ugochukwu from Chelsea for a club-record fee last summer, while the midfielder spent the previous campaign on loan at Southampton, making 35 Premier League appearances.

Should the nationality switch be completed, Ugochukwu would provide the Super Eagles with another high-quality midfield option as Nigeria continues to strengthen its squad ahead of future international competitions.

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has sustained an ankle ligament injury ahead of Besiktas's UEFA Europa League second qualifying round first-leg clash against FC Midtjylland, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed his desire to pursue a career in football administration after retirement, saying Nigerian football can only progress if more former players are entrusted with leadership positions, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The former Nigeria skipper, who retired from international football in 2025 after making 83 appearances for the Super Eagles, disclosed that he has already begun preparing for life after playing by enrolling in educational programmes organised by the English Football Association.

Rather than becoming a coach, Ekong believes he can make a greater impact through administrative and governance roles within football.

“I have had so many people ask me about coaching the team; I am not sure that is something that I really want to do.

“I think there also need to be players that think about going one level above that, whether it is going to be in the boardroom, whether it is going to be working with federations, with FIFA, with CAF, whether the NFF. I think that is probably where you can make the biggest change,” Ekong told Brila FM.

The central defender admitted that football administration in Africa is often influenced by politics but maintained that former players possess the knowledge and experience required to help improve the game if given meaningful opportunities.

“It is a difficult landscape because in African football there is also a lot of politics involved. We have so many ex-players who have a great understanding of the game. I do not think we have seen enough ex-players getting involved from the top. For me in Nigerian football, it is about finding ways that we can collaborate and enhance the federation because we have been there; we have seen it,” he said.

Ekong cited several former footballers who have successfully transitioned into leadership positions, including Andriy Shevchenko and Samuel Eto’o, who both became presidents of their respective football federations, as well as Brazilian legend Zico, who served as his country's Minister of Sports.

“What I would love to do now, and the way I am preparing this part of my career, is to try and find ways where I can be part of the solution to see Nigeria reach bigger heights than we did when I was a player,” he added.

Ekong enjoyed an illustrious international career, representing Nigeria at the 2016 Olympic Games, the 2018 FIFA World Cup and multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He captained the Super Eagles to a runners-up finish at the 2023 AFCON, where he was named the tournament's Best Player.

His remarks come amid renewed discussions about the state of football administration in Nigeria following the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Former striker Peter Ijeh recently blamed poor administration and a lack of accountability for the team's struggles, while ex-captain John Obi Mikel criticised the country's football system during an appearance on Peter Crouch's podcast, revealing he had declined invitations to get involved due to disagreements with current officials.

However, former Nigeria international Oladimeji Lawal responded by urging Mikel to contribute practical solutions rather than public criticism, noting that, to his knowledge, the former Chelsea midfielder had not invested in any football academy or facility in Nigeria since retiring.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has returned to South African Premier Soccer League side Chippa United ahead of the 2026/27 season, with the club officially confirming his comeback, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Msibi ended the campaign with five clean sheets, captained the side on several occasions and reportedly entered the conversation for a Bafana Bafana call-up.

However, Nwabali's return is expected to reignite competition for the number one shirt ahead of the new season.

According to iDiski Times, Chippa United have also shelved plans to sign former Polokwane City goalkeeper Brian Bwire and defender Bongani Sam following the Nigerian's return.

Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has claimed he was denied the opportunity to sign for Enugu Rangers at the start of his career because he was not of Igbo origin, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The Paris FC star made the revelation during an interview with UrbanDwellSport, recalling a disappointing experience after spending three months on trial with the seven-time Nigeria Premier Football League champions.

According to Simon, he impressed the coaching staff throughout the screening exercise and was even appointed captain of the trial team, leaving him convinced that he had earned a professional contract.

However, the winger alleged that he was overlooked despite his performances, while another player was signed after only a brief trial.

"I went to Rangers and trained with them for three months. I wasn't signed, but I was training with them. In fact, I was the captain of the 'screening' team.

"I've never told anyone this story; this is the first time, but it was a disgrace. I was dropped because I was not Igbo.

"I was there for three months, and a guy came I have forgotten his name; he's an Ibo guy, he just trained one week, and they signed him, professional contract, they said because I was from the north or something."

Despite the setback, Simon went on to build a successful career in Europe.

In January 2014, he signed a three-year contract with Slovak club Tren?ín and made his league debut in a 1-1 draw against MFK Košice.

He also featured in the UEFA Europa League during the 2014/15 campaign, making his continental debut in Tren?ín's second qualifying round tie against Serbian side Vojvodina Novi Sad.

The Nigerian international later enjoyed successful spells with Belgian club Gent and Spanish side Levante before joining French outfit Nantes on an initial loan move in August 2019. Nantes eventually exercised the option to make the transfer permanent following his impressive performances.

During his time at Gent, Simon won the Belgian Pro League title and the Belgian Super Cup, while he also lifted the Coupe de France with Nantes.

On the international stage, the winger has represented Nigeria at four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, featuring at the 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2025 editions.
