Monaco striker Paris Brunner has apologised after making a throat-slitting gesture towards Strasbourg supporters following his goal in a 1-1 French championship draw.

The 20-year-old German equalised in the 71st minute with an impressive long-range strike before running towards the Strasbourg fans and moving his thumb across his throat.

The incident could be referred to the LFP disciplinary committee, which may consider whether Brunner should face punishment.

After the match, Brunner said the gesture came in response to insults directed at his parents by Strasbourg supporters.

The forward later apologised for his actions on social media. It is not yet known whether he will receive a fine or a suspension.

Matvey Safonov has been nominated for the Lev Yashin Trophy, awarded annually to the world’s best goalkeeper, with prominent coach Valery Gazzaev offering his assessment of the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper’s bid for the prestigious prize.

The award was won last year by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Safonov joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024 and has since established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper after winning the competition for a starting place.

The Russian has also collected nine trophies with Paris Saint-Germain.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has been diagnosed with a minor strain to his right thigh after being injured during the Ligue 1 match against Brest.

The club published the results of the Morocco international’s medical examination on its official website on Monday.

Hakimi will undergo treatment over the next two days. Paris Saint-Germain said it would provide a further update on his condition afterwards.

Luis Enrique’s side are due to return to Ligue 1 action on Sunday, 20 September, when they travel to face Marseille.

Dynamo goalkeeper Andrey Lunev says Matvey Safonov’s nomination for last season’s best goalkeeper award is “worthy of admiration and respect”.

Safonov, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, is among the candidates for the prize after establishing himself on the international stage. The winner will be announced on 26 October at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

The 26-year-old has made seven appearances for Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions during the new season and has kept one clean sheet.

Lunev, who currently represents Dynamo, was asked to respond to Safonov’s nomination and praised the achievement.

“Worthy of admiration and respect,” Lunev said.

Safonov’s market value is estimated at 30 million euros, according to Transfermarkt. That figure places him eighth in the ranking of the world’s most valuable goalkeepers.

The nomination gives Safonov the opportunity to be recognised among the leading players in his position worldwide, with the final decision due to be made at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on 26 October.

Russian football coach Yuri Semin does not believe Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvey Safonov will be named the best goalkeeper of the year by France Football.

Safonov has been included in the shortlist for the award covering the previous season, placing the 27-year-old among the leading goalkeepers in the world.

However, Semin said the nomination itself represented a significant achievement for both Safonov and Russian football.

“It is already a serious accomplishment for Safonov himself and for Russian football,” the experienced coach said.

Marseille’s Ligue 1 campaign began its fourth round with another defeat as Bruno Genesio’s side were beaten narrowly away by Rennes.

The result was Marseille’s third loss in their opening four league matches under Genesio, who has become only the fourth manager in the club’s history to make such a poor start.

The previous coach to suffer three defeats in his first four league games in charge was Croatia’s Ivan Markovic, who recorded the same sequence in 1977.

Hugo Magnetti has committed his future to Stade Brestois 29 by signing a contract extension that will keep him at the Ligue 1 club until 2029.

The 28-year-old midfielder announced the agreement before Brest’s league meeting with Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.

Magnetti began his football education with the youth teams of Olympique de Marseille, Burel and SC Bastia. He joined Brest in 2017 and initially played for the club’s reserve side.

A year later, he established himself in the first team and has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for Brest. During that time, he has scored six goals and supplied seven assists.

Magnetti is now the club’s vice-captain and played an important part in Brest’s Champions League campaign two seasons ago.

He started 31 of his 33 Ligue 1 matches last season, scoring once and creating two goals. The midfielder has started two of Brest’s three games so far this term.

Paris Saint-Germain secured their first Ligue 1 victory of the season at the fourth attempt as Ferran Torres’ early goal earned them a hard-fought 1-0 success at Stade Brestois.

PSG were determined to respond after last week’s home defeat by Monaco and avoid going without a win in their opening four games for the first time since 2007. They made the ideal start in Brittany when Joao Neves found Ousmane Dembele on the edge of the area after five minutes.

Dembele then picked out Torres, who struck first time from 25 yards and sent the ball into the bottom corner.

Paris Saint-Germain’s attack continued to threaten in the opening stages. Dembele forced a fine save from Egil Selvik, whose parry fell to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but the Georgia international dragged his shot wide.

Brest, playing on an emotional evening as they mourned the death of legendary manager Eric Roy, took more than 15 minutes to create a clear opening. Pathe Mboup fired over from the edge of the box before Ludovic Ajorque narrowly missed the target with a glancing header from Kenny Lala’s delivery.

PSG manager Luis Enrique was forced to change his plans when influential right-back Achraf Hakimi went off injured midway through the first half. The adjustment appeared to disrupt the visitors’ attacking rhythm, while Brest defended resolutely and limited PSG to another Kvaratskhelia attempt, which Selvik tipped over the bar.

Brest push for an equaliser

Five minutes into the second half, Nuno Mendes almost gifted Brest an equaliser when his loose pass near his own penalty area was intercepted by Kamory Doumbia. The midfielder’s effort beat the advancing Matvey Safonov but struck the post.

PSG thought they had added a second when Bradley Locko put the ball into his own net, but the goal was disallowed after the Brest defender was adjudged to have been pushed by Warren Zaire-Emery.

Locko soon made a positive contribution at the other end, finding Doumbia with a cross. His powerful header appeared destined for the bottom corner, but Safonov produced an outstanding low save to his left.

The PSG defence continued to look vulnerable. Willian Pacho made a crucial interception inside his own six-yard box to prevent further danger after Zaire-Emery was dispossessed by Mboup.

An increasingly frustrated Luis Enrique responded with two attacking substitutions, and both replacements came close to making an immediate impact. Maghnes Akliouche progressed down the left before sending a dangerous ball across the penalty area, but Selvik denied the sliding Neves with a desperate save.

Safonov then kept out another effort from Mboup as Brest pressed for an equaliser. PSG ultimately held on for three points, their second victory of the week after dismantling Slovan Bratislava in midweek.

Paris Saint-Germain will now prepare for next week’s Le Classique against Marseille. Brest can take encouragement from their performance despite suffering their first defeat of the season.

Ligue 2 club USL Dunkerque have signed Senegal forward M’Baye Niang on a one-year contract, with the option to extend the agreement for another season.

The 31-year-old was without a club after leaving Turkish side Genclerbirligi. He made 27 appearances for the club last season, scoring six goals and supplying two assists.

Niang began his career at the SM Caen academy and made his professional debut with the French club. Since then, he has played for 15 other teams, including AC Milan, Watford and Wydad AC.

His return to France adds considerable experience to the Dunkerque squad. The forward has represented Montpellier HSC, Stade Rennais, Girondins de Bordeaux and AJ Auxerre during his career.

Niang has played more than 160 Ligue 1 matches and scored around 40 goals. He joins a Dunkerque side that have also recently brought in 2018 World Cup winner Steven Nzonzi.

Lille moved level on points with Monaco and Rennes at the top of Ligue 1 after ending their four-game home winless run with a 2-0 victory over newly promoted Troyes.

The result gave Davide Ancelotti’s side their first home win of the campaign, following a disappointing UEFA Champions League defeat by Real Betis in midweek that had taken some of the shine off Lille’s early position as pre-weekend leaders.

Lille controlled possession from the outset, while Troyes were cautious after being beaten 6-2 by Strasbourg seven days earlier. The hosts thought they had taken the lead after only two minutes when Dilane Bakwa’s effort struck the post and fell to Hakor Arnar Haraldsson, who finished into an empty net.

However, VAR ruled out the goal for a marginal offside decision.

The disallowed effort did little to disrupt Lille’s patient approach, with their intricate passing eventually producing the opening goal. Tiago Santos collected the ball from Bakwa just outside the Troyes penalty area before curling an excellent finish beyond Patrick Beach and into the left side of the net.

Lille appeared to have scored again three minutes later. Basar Onal’s low delivery caused confusion in the Troyes defence and was bundled in by Michel Diaz, in what looked like an own goal. The effort was ruled out, though, after the Lille player was flagged offside.

Troyes struggled to create opportunities during the first half. Stephane Dumont’s team managed four shots, but none were on target, and they were fortunate to reach the interval only one goal behind.

Dumont’s half-time instructions brought a more positive response after the break. Anis Ouzenadji helped Troyes make progress down the left wing in the early stages of the second half, but Lille were comfortable absorbing the pressure.

Ancelotti then introduced Olivier Giroud, Gaetan Perrin and Ethan Mbappe as he changed his entire front four. Mbappe had been sent off for elbowing a Real Betis player only four days earlier.

The changes almost produced an immediate second goal. Kjaergaard played Perrin through, but Beach reacted quickly to reach the ball just before the Lille forward.

Troyes continued to threaten Lille’s lead without finding an equaliser, and Mbappe finally settled the contest in the 93rd minute with his first goal of the season.

Lille could not maintain the same level of momentum they had shown early in the match, but their victory was deserved. Troyes, however, can take encouragement from limiting the hosts for long periods after half-time.

Monaco stayed at the top of Ligue 1 after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Strasbourg at the Stade de la Meinau.

The result extended Strasbourg’s unbeaten run to three matches, with the hosts taking seven points from their last three games. Monaco, meanwhile, were forced to settle for a draw after being outplayed for long spells before recovering in the second half.

The visitors struggled to make an impact early on and did not manage a single shot on target during the opening 20 minutes. Their task became more difficult when Anis Soubeir had to be helped off the field.

Although Monaco enjoyed the greater share of possession, Strasbourg’s midfield pairing of Pape Diop and Gio Reyna disrupted their rhythm and repeatedly broke up their attacks.

Strasbourg grew stronger after the half-hour mark and went close to taking the lead when Gessime Yassine’s left-footed effort from 12 yards went just wide of the post.

That chance was one of five unanswered attempts from the home side as they controlled the closing stages of the first half. Filip Jorgensen was rarely called upon in the Strasbourg goal before the break.

The pressure finally told six minutes after half-time, although the opening goal came through an unfortunate mistake. Sadibou Sane, who had completed 100% of his passes up to that point, misjudged the flight of a free-kick and headed the ball beyond his own goalkeeper.

Monaco nearly responded immediately. Paris Brunner’s powerful header appeared destined for the net, but Jorgensen produced an acrobatic one-handed save to divert it on to the post.

The match settled into a period in which neither team was able to establish control, before Monaco found an equaliser through Brunner. After carrying the ball forward from midfield, he fired an unstoppable 30-yard shot into the top corner.

Monaco thought they had completed the comeback in the 87th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Strasbourg’s performance means they have lost only one of their past eight Ligue 1 home matches played on a Saturday, recording five wins and two draws in that sequence.

Filipe Luis’ Monaco side will have to accept dropping points and failing to win for the first time in 2026/27.

A man has been sentenced to nine years for his role in a violent robbery in which Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and his girlfriend were held captive at their Paris home.

Ilyas Kherbouch was convicted on Saturday of complicity in armed robbery and unlawful detention, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office and his lawyer, Alfred Reboul, who spoke to Reuters.

Donnarumma and his girlfriend were attacked at the property in July 2023, when the Italian goalkeeper was playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

Kherbouch was accused of organising the robbery from prison while serving a sentence for other offences. His lawyer said the court found him guilty of involvement in the attack.

The nine-year sentence was shorter than the 10 years requested by the prosecutor. Reboul said Kherbouch had not yet decided whether to appeal.

Donnarumma left Paris Saint-Germain a year ago to join Manchester City. Before his departure, he helped the French club win the Champions League for the first time.

Matvey Safonov has been selected in L'Equipe’s team of the fourth round of Ligue 1 after helping PSG beat Brest 1-0.

The Russian goalkeeper was rated the best-performing PSG player by the newspaper, receiving eight out of 10 for his display.

Sofascore also gave Safonov the highest assessment, awarding him a rating of 9.3. He finished almost two points clear of the next-best players in the ranking.

Safonov made six saves against Brest to secure victory for PSG and record his first clean sheet of the 2026/2027 season.
