Atalanta co-owner Stephen Pagliuca says Gasperini's comments about Lookman was a 'mistake', Nigeriasoccernet.com has gathered.

This comes days after Atalanta BC Coach Gian Piero Gasperini's strong words after the Nigerian missed a penalty against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League playoff match.

Lookman had come in to reduce the deficit for Atalanta BC after falling behind by 3 goals but had failed to reduce the deficit further.

Leading his manager Gasperini to say, "He's the worst penalty taker I've ever seen." after the match which Atalanta BC lost 1-3 and failed to qualify.

The statement made by Gasperini has generated a lot of condemnation from fans and support for Lookman who is the current African footballer of the year.

The most recent comment on the issue is from Stephen Pagliuca who admits Gasperini got emotional and made a mistake in his comments.

"Gasperini's reaction was emotional regrettable a mistake that went against our policy and something we are not proud of. But I repeat, Gasp remains a great coach."

"We want to put this story behind us and I think we did that with the 5-0 win in Empoli. We have a great coach, very passionate."

"He made a mistake by talking about an individual player. We have a policy at Atalanta that if things go wrong, we take the blame.".

Ademola Lookman dusted off himself days later to score a brace in Atlanta BC's 5-0 win over Empoli who was awarded the man of the match.
