Everton attacking midfielder Alex Iwobi has been in fine form for both club and country so far this term, and he has credited Rafa Benitez for it.

The Nigerian international, 25, has a goal and assist in four appearances across all competitions for the Toffees this term.

Iwobi also assisted both goals during his country’s 2-0 win over Liberia in their World Cup qualifiers last Friday, and he is hoping he can keep up those impressive performances going forward.

“The manager is always talking to me and trying to help me,” Iwobi told Everton TV.

“It’s helped me a lot so far this season. It’s not just me, of course, but the whole team [he speaks to].

“My confidence is playing a big part, too. I’m pushing a bit more up the field and getting involved in attacks. I just need to add more goals and assists, like the manager wants.

“With the manager, he doesn’t give us any rest, he’s onto us 24/7. This is what we need. You can see everyone’s playing with a lot of confidence. That big motivation is there [to continue achieving positive results].

“We’ve started off very well, but we have to keep going until the end. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”

Finally fulfilling potential?

Everton brought in Benitez as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement in the summer, and the Spanish manager has been an inspired addition to the squad, constantly looking to get the best out of everyone.

Iwobi joined the Toffees from Arsenal in the summer of 2019 and has been involved in four league goals since his arrival.

The Nigerian was involved in nine league goals in his last season at the North London outfit, and it is safe to say he has struggled and regressed since moving to Merseyside.

Iwobi has a lot of talents, and Benitez is now looking to get the best out of him.

The attacker has the potential to become one of the best players in his position given the promises he showed at Arsenal, and he appears to have found a manager that can get him to start firing on all cylinders.

Iwobi has started the new campaign brightly, but he needs to keep getting better and delivering on a consistent basis, and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the final third this term and going forward.
