The Nigeria U-20 women continued their decent outing at the FIFA women's world cup going on in Alajuela, Costa Rica after winning their last group match against Canada.

 

The Nigerian girls after two wins, completed the wins in the group stage by beating Canada by three goals to one.

 

The team who had previously scored just twice with two 1-0 wins, scored three times this time to end a wonderful group showing.

 

A brace by Esther Onyenezide and Chioma Olise after an early goal by the Canadians sealed the win and ensure the Falconets progress to the quarters on unscathed.

 

How it happened

 

The Canadians drew the first blood scoring in the fourth minutes after a blunder by goalkeeper Oyono as the girls tried to settle into the game at Estadio Alajuela Morera Soto.

 

After mounting several pressure on the Canadian defense something finally gave as a Canadian handled the ball in the box 18 twenty minutes into the game .

 

Onyenezide wasted. no time to put the ball at the back of the net to level the two teams

 

In quick succession, the Nigerian team were awarded another penalty kick as Mercy Idoko suffered a challenge that was later judged by VAR to be a penalty.

 

Onyenezide once again was called into action and she didn't fail, she delivered putting her team in the lead in the 32nd minutes.

 

As the first half reached it crescendo, the Nigerian team remained on the ascendency as Idoko, Abiodun failed to punish their opponents the more after missing chances.

 

At the resumption of the second half, it was a more conservative and efficient play by the girls in green and white.

 

But with three minutes from the minutes additional time, Olise came on to the cross of Rofiat Imuran to score Nigeria's third

 

Nigeria play the Netherlands next in the round of 16.
