The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has distanced itself from a controversial press statement that singled out William Troost-Ekong and Cyriel Dessers for criticism following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.

The statement, which emerged on Tuesday night from the Federation’s Communications Department, directly blamed the two players for the Group C result. However, NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, denied any official approval of the release, describing it as unauthorized.

“It was a painful result, but as a believer, I know that whatever comes is from God,” Sanusi told journalist Omofoma Ebare in a phone interview. “We are not happy, and we apologize to Nigerians. But I saw the press release the same way everyone else did. The NFF did not authorize anyone to publish such a statement.”

Sanusi stressed the need for unity and collective responsibility, insisting that victories and defeats must be shared as a team.

“We are proud of our players. Blaming individuals is not acceptable. When we win, it’s a team effort, and when we lose, it’s the same. No single player should be held responsible,” he said.

He also defended the contributions of Troost-Ekong and Dessers, noting their service to Nigerian football.

“The two players have contributed significantly to the growth of the game in Nigeria. They deserve respect, not criticism. We are not happy with them being singled out,” Sanusi added.

The NFF has launched an investigation to trace the source of the press release and promised disciplinary action against those responsible.

The draw leaves Nigeria’s qualification hopes hanging by a thread, with the Super Eagles sitting on 11 points from eight matches. Having missed out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the three-time African champions are now facing the possibility of back-to-back failures.
