2026 World Cup Playoff: Coach Mouyouma sets sughts on Super Eagles upset
Gabon's head coach, Thierry Mouyouma, has revealed his team's strategy for Thursday's 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff against Nigeria, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Mouyouma says his side will focus on controlling the game and the midfield.
Speaking ahead of the encounter in Rabat, Morocco, Mouyouma expressed confidence that a 1-0 win over the Super Eagles would be enough to secure a spot in the next round of the playoff.
“One of the keys to this match lies in the ability to control not only the game but also the midfield,” Mouyouma said at a press conference as per Dailypost.
“I would be more focused on our ability to hold onto the ball, have more possession, not just possession for its own sake, but to dominate in our half of the field and progress together as a team.
“We have to solve this problem – control of the game or almost all of the game in the opponent’s half.
“That brings us closer to their goal because, for this match, we only need to score one goal to qualify.
“That is the tactical approach from the technical staff of the Gabonese national team.”
The winner of the Gabon-Nigeria tie will face the winner of the Cameroon-DR Congo match, with a place in the intercontinental playoffs on offer.
