Ghana U23 prospect Abdul Fatawu Safiu pulled his weight with an important goal for American side Portland Timbers as they overcame English Premier League side Newcastle United 4-3 in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday night Portland.

The former Inter Allies forward, 21, pecked the scoring for Caleb Porter's squad with a close range tap-in on the 13th minute mark as the Timbers II fought from a goal down to beat the Magpies.

Fatawu's form for Timbers' second string side earned him a place in the first team squad for the friendly and he proved his values by scoring the equalizer.

Belmar had a one-on-one in the box. His shot was saved, but Fatawu arrived in time to bury the rebound.

Newcastle new signings pulled goals for the touring side but Timbers II maintained their impressive form in the USL season to defeat them after the final.

Fatawu, who has been included in Ghana U23's squad for the All African Games, also scored over the weekend in the USL.
