Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle has defended his decision to leave out captain William Troost-Ekong from the starting lineup against Rwanda, stating that he was simply doing his job, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Troost-Ekong, who typically leads the team as captain, was benched for the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier, with 20-year-old Benjamin Fredrick starting alongside Calvin Bassey in central defense.
Wilfred Ndidi took on the captain's armband as the team secured a 1-0 victory over Rwanda.
Chelle later brought Troost-Ekong on as a substitute in the dying minutes of the game.
Speaking after the match, Chelle emphasized that his decision was based on tactical considerations and that he was confident in the players he chose.
"I don’t want to explain myself; this is my choice as a coach, and I respect and believe in all my players.
“This is my job. If we win, everybody will be happy, and if we don’t, they will complain, but this is my choice.”
The win has kept Nigeria's World Cup hopes alive, with the Super Eagles now preparing for their next challenge against South Africa.
