Chelle Declares: “I Now Consider Myself Nigerian” as Super Eagles Prepare for AFCON 2025
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed that he now sees himself as Nigerian, reflecting his deep emotional connection to the country since taking charge of the national team, writes Nigeriasoccernet.com.
The French-born Malian tactician, appointed in 2024, has made a strong impression in his first year as head coach, remaining unbeaten in competitive matches and instilling renewed belief within the Super Eagles camp. With Nigeria gearing up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, Chelle says his relationship with the country has grown far beyond football.
In an interview with CAF Media, the 46-year-old coach spoke about his evolving identity and the sense of unity he has found in Nigeria.
“As I often say, it’s my DNA. Looking back on my career, this goes beyond football. Coming to coach in Africa, taking that step, it’s more than sport,” Chelle explained.
He stressed that his coaching philosophy is rooted in respect and inclusiveness, noting that football serves as a bridge that unites people across different backgrounds.
“I use football to carry a message that everyone can live together. It’s not about origin or religion; it’s about respect for the individual. Yes, it made waves that a Malian is in charge of Nigeria, but I’m simply trying to do my job with humility and respect.”
Chelle concluded by reaffirming his commitment to Nigeria and expressing how much the country has become a part of him.
“I arrived as someone who was 50% Malian and 50% French. But today, I am in Nigeria; I consider myself Nigerian, and I’m ready to give everything for this team and country. I’m focused on respecting each person and moving forward carefully with clear personal goals.”
Under Chelle’s leadership, optimism is high among Nigerian supporters who believe the Super Eagles can reclaim continental glory in Morocco next year. His calm demeanor, tactical awareness, and emphasis on unity have helped foster renewed hope that Nigeria’s golden era may be on the horizon once again.
