Besiktas midfielder Wilfred Ndidi faces a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a thigh injury while representing Nigeria in the 1-1 FIFA World Cup qualifier draw against South Africa on Tuesday night, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.

The Turkish giants confirmed the setback in a statement released on their official website on Thursday morning, disclosing that the Super Eagles star suffered a muscle strain.

“Our player, Wilfred Ndidi, who was unable to play due to an injury sustained during the Nigerian national team’s match against South Africa, has returned to Turkey,” the statement read. An evaluation and MRI performed at Ac?badem Altunizade Hospital revealed a strain and bleeding in the posterior thigh muscle (semimembranosus). Our medical team has begun treatment.”

Ndidi, 28, was forced off in the second half of the game and replaced by Christantus Uche. His injury will rule him out of Besiktas’ Turkish Super Lig clash against Istanbul Ba?ak?ehir on Saturday.

The midfielder joined Besiktas in July from Leicester City on a three-year contract and has so far made two league appearances for the 16-time Turkish champions.
